One of the roofing problems that can lead to your Spanish tile roof leaking is water that does not drain properly from the roof. Water should steadily flow from the tiles off the side of the roof, but if it sits, it can damage the tiles or the underlayment beneath the tiles, leading to a leak. Being able to identify that water may not be properly draining from your tile roofing allows you to call in a professional to fix the problem before it worsens. Here are a few of the signs that water may not be properly draining from a Spanish tile roof.

Algae or Moss is Growing On Your Roof

One of the signs that water may be sitting on a Spanish tile roof is algae or moss growing on your roof. In rare instances, you may even see a tree sapling or plant growing from the roof. These items can grow when water puddles on the roof rather than draining away. Not only is this problematic because it can lead to a roof leak, but algae and moss can both weaken and damage clay tiles, which may lead to the tiles needing to be replaced.

There Are Dark Stains on the Tiles

Another sign that water may not be draining correctly from your Spanish tile is dark stains on the tiles. Dark stains on the tile may be caused by black algae, but stains can also be caused by bleed-through. Underneath the tiles is an underlayment that is typically made from felt or asphalt. If water seeps under the tiles and sits on the underlayment, it can transfer the color to your tiles, particularly lighter-colored tiles, leaving behind dark or black spots.

There Are Water Spots on the Underside of Your Roof

The final sign that water may not be draining from your Spanish tile roofing is seeing water spots on the underside of your roof. If you go into an unfinished attic and stare upward, you are most likely looking at the underside of your roof. If you see water spotting or smell moisture in the space, your roof likely already has a leak that has been caused by water not properly draining away from the roof.

If you see any signs that water may not be draining from your Spanish tile roofing, you need to call in a roofer for repairs. A professional can determine why the water is not draining away from the roof and fix the problem before it causes larger issues, such as a leak or water damage to structural components of the roof.
