A roof leak is one of those problems you can't afford to ignore. If you wait, the leak will continue to let water into your home and damage your valuable possessions. It can also cause mold growth, a serious health risk to you and your household members. Unfortunately, some leaks can be difficult to locate and fix, especially if you aren't a roofing expert. But don't worry, here are four signs to help you know when you need residential roof leak repairs.

Water Dripping From Your Ceiling

You might think this sign is obvious, but that's not always the case. The leak may only be a tiny drop of water dripping once or twice every hour, so you might not notice it. And if you do, you might think it's not a big deal. Unfortunately, even that tiny leak can lead to costly repairs if left unattended. For example, the dripping water could damage furniture or electronic items. If you see any water drips coming from your ceiling, check if you can see any noticeable holes on the roof and then seek home roof leak repairs.

Water Stains

Water stains or discolorations on your ceiling or walls also point to a leaking roof. The water travels down from the leak to the attic space, leading to moisture retention. From there, the water finds the lowest point, from where it will appear. Keep in mind that water stains aren't always visible. Sometimes, they appear along exterior walls or in dark corners of your roof. This is why it's advisable to seek regular roof inspections. They allow you to catch the hidden signs before significant damage has occurred.

Missing or Damaged Flashing

Water leaks can appear when the metal flashing around your roof, vents, or chimney goes missing or is damaged. Often, the damage is caused by high winds or storms. It can also occur due to natural drying or cracking. As long as the leaking water hasn't caused other internal roof damage, you can fix this problem by hiring an expert to redo the flashing. You don't need to replace the entire roof.

Plant Growth (Mold, Algae, Fungi)

Is a section of your roof that is starting to turn green? If yes, you might be dealing with mold or other plant growth. And if that's the case, then you can bet that there is moisture allowing them to thrive. Also, you may not notice it while inside the house, but the plant growth causes your roof to decay. It can also cause shingle damage with time. Therefore, fix the leaks as soon as possible, so you don't have to spend lots of money on costly repairs or replacements.
